How to Spend New Year's Eve Home Alone

Finding yourself alone and at home on New Year’s Eve? Does this make you sad or depressed? Or, are you like me and you revel in it because you realized long ago that all those New Year’s Eve parties are over-hyped and make you claustrophobic anyway?

Still, even if you don’t like the parties, it might make you sad to be completely alone. Maybe your significant other is deployed or simply lives far away, is working or for whatever reason y’all have decided to spend it apart.

Are you like me and live in a small town where there is nothing to do even you wanted to and you don’t want to drive 30 minutes way with no way of driving home if you drink?

For all these reasons, I put together this how-to guide of spending New Year’s Eve home alone.

Have a Movie Marathon

Have a favorite series?  Marathon it!  My personal picks would be Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter.

As for a TV Show marathon, I would choose Gilmore Girls, Game of Thrones, Girls, or The Walking Dead.  I actually think AMC is doing a Walking Dead New Year’s marathon so there ya go!

Party with your Pets

Deck your pets out to the nines for New Year’s!  They love you more than anyone else anyway, right?!

Dye your Hair a Crazy Color

Have you been wanting to dye your hair a fun crazy color?  What better time than the beginning of a new year?  Fresh start anyone?

Here’s some inspiration.  Sidenote: I am actually going to be doing my hair another crazy color in January – still deciding on which.

Build a Badass Fort

Remember how fun this was as a kid?  Why not build an awesome fort to watch your movie marathon in or to catch up on reading or just to lay and gaze at the lights?  You may never want to take it down!

Make a Junk Food Buffet

Get in all that junk food one last time before you swear it off.

Pamper Yourself

Give yourself a complete pampering session: manicure, pedicure, bubble bath, hair treatment.  Hell, shave your legs for the first time this winter!

Throw Things Away

Have you made a resolution of some kind that requires giving something up?  Take the time now to throw away all that food you aren’t going to eat.  Trying to downsize as your resolution?  Start now!  Use this closet trick to downsize your clothes.

Make an Online Dating Profile

Is being alone on New Year’s alone making you realize you need a significant other?  Sign up for a dating site!  There’s no shame in it, especially if your schedule/location doesn’t really allow for meeting other singles.  Check out these tips for making your own profile.

I live in a city but it’s a city where most people decamp elsewhere for NYE. Personally I got over NYE a loooong time ago! More than happy to spend it chilling at home.

I’m all about a movie marathon! I personally never like to go out on New Year’s b/c all the drinkers, and I’m just uneasy about all those drunk drivers. My husband and I have put a fort together in the living room and watched movies with candlelight, it was perfect!

I will be with my husband and because we are lame, we will be going to bed early LOL 🙂

Hopefully, it will just be the hubs and me for NYE. I’m so tired of holiday cooking and having a house full of hungry grownup kids. I need the rest and relaxation. 🙂 Great tips!

OMG!!! I love the fort idea! The hubs and I will probably bring in the New Year watching HGTV, but now it’ll be under our fort eating brownies!!! Great post!

I love this post for so many reasons!! I have spent my past couple of New Year’s Eves at home but it’s because I have had to be at work the next day at 630am on New Years Day. Boooo on hospital hours. These are some great ideas and I am particularly loving the badass fort idea!!!

I love the idea of a Junk Food Buffet! While I am never alone on NYE, I can totally use this on another day! Thanks for all the great ideas and Happy New Years! <3

I love your ideas! I won’t be alone this year but we do not plan to do anything. We will be home. Maybe we will build the fort for our sons to play in. 🙂

The movie marathon is definitely what I would do and have loads of my favorite foods nearby! Have a Happy New Year!

I party every new year eve with my son. We eat, play games and toast in the new year with apple cider.

I vote for movie marathon and make a super cheesy choice, like the original Planet of the Apes movies.

  12. December 30, 2014 @ 4:36 PM Pam

These are really great ideas and I really love the party with your pet idea, LOL. My husband and I usually spend it at home with our two dogs and they always get a little of whatever we have.

I will be home with my kids. It is not very exciting, but we will probably play a game and watch tv.

  14. December 30, 2014 @ 7:33 PM Tiffany

What Fun!! I think I would do a few of these at home with the Kiddies…especially the junk food buffet and fort! Great Post!

  15. December 30, 2014 @ 8:02 PM Debbie Denny

Awesome pamper for you. Have a great New Year.

  16. December 30, 2014 @ 9:14 PM Mryjhnsn

These are all great ideas. Especially the fort. Love the fort.

  17. December 30, 2014 @ 10:10 PM Cathy

These are all really great ideas regardless of whether you’re alone or not. We’ll be at home as family playing board games, eating snacks, and waiting for the ball to drop so we can all share a toast at midnight. Happy 2015 to you!

  18. December 30, 2014 @ 10:24 PM Censie

Great ideas. New Years eve we always stay at home with the kids. Nothing big.

  19. December 31, 2014 @ 3:53 AM Michelle Bowman

That badass fort is something else! I want to do that!

I love the idea of celebrating with your pet. I will be doing that with hubby and My daisy she is begal/basset mix and we will have a blast

These are all great ideas on how to swing in the New Year by yourself. I’ll be hosting a get-together tonight so I’ll have plenty of company, but someday I might really enjoy welcoming the new year on my own!

  22. December 31, 2014 @ 11:32 AM Janeane Davi

These are great ideas for spending a big holiday at home alone. Many people spend the day alone and dont realize they don’t need company to have funny.

  23. December 31, 2014 @ 12:22 PM Katie

I will be spending the evening quietly at home with my family. I wouldn’t have it any other way! Thanks for these ideas, we might use one or two of them ourselves.

  24. December 31, 2014 @ 4:16 PM Danielle

I love all of these ideas, they’re fabulous! Building a badass fort is tops on my list 😉

  25. January 1, 2015 @ 8:49 PM Real Talk Moms

I love the photos of your pets. What a fantastic idea to dress then up with NY’s hats. I am going to try the Awesome Jar. What a great idea!

  26. January 5, 2015 @ 3:53 PM Krystal

I should have built a fort! That would have been an amazing idea! We were just lounging when the ball dropped.
