Getting organized is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. Even more specifically is downsizing. It’s one thing to organize and still have way more than you need. That can mean your entire house, your closet, your kitchen, bathroom (how many lotions do you REALLY need?) and much more.
I personally need to organize all of them. Here are some of my favorite ways to downsize my own home:
1. Turn Hangers Around
I think this is one of the simplest and most brilliant things ever. Before the New Year starts, turn all of your hangers around the wrong way. When you wear something and re-hang, make sure to hang it the correct way.
At the end of the year, whichever hangers are still the wrong way are the clothes you need to get rid of immediately. You haven’t worn those items in a year! Probably longer to be honest.
2. Get Rid of Hygiene Products
Do you have 20 different shampoos, lotions, perfumes, lipsticks and so on? Do you have so many products that half of them haven’t even been opened?
A great way to free up some space and actually start using the prodcuts you want to use is to get rid of probably 80% of what you have.
Go through and pick out the products you ACTUALLY use. Set them aside to keep. Not the products you want to use or “will use.” Only the ones you use.
Now, go through and pick out the products that have never been opened. Set those in a donate box. You can take them to a homeless shelter – there are some women that would love to have them
Now, go through and pick out all the items that you’ve had since college that have been opened but never finished – throw those away. They are so old they’d probably kill you if you used them now.
And for goodness sake, tell people to quit buying you these things for gifts.
3. Clean Out Your Fridge and Pantry
Go through your fridge and pantry and throw anything out that is past it’s expiration date. You’d be highly surprised how many condiment you’ll find that are old. You’ll also be surprised how many times you’ve bought ketchup because you thought you were out because you couldn’t see it and now you realize you have 5 bottles of ketchup. Or, is that just me?
This will make things look neater, more organized and save you money.
4. Get Rid of Things You Don’t Think Takes Up Much Space
If you’re anything like me, you hoard the dumbest things. For instance, I never throw away underwear – no matter how many times I buy new ones, I for some reason never throw any away. So, my drawers are overflowing. That’s changing though. Go and throw away 50% of what you have and I bet you still have enough for months.
Another thing I have way too many of is pens, pencils, markers etc. I have a weird fascination for office supplies and love good pens. But, I also know there are plenty in my desk that don’t even work anymore. I could easily cut out a quarter of what I have based on that alone.
I bet you can think of a million things to get rid of that “aren’t taking up that much space.” If you put all those things together, how much space could you be saving?
I love my stuff. And, I love collecting certain things. And, I’ll always have a full house. But, I’ve learnt that there are so many things I’ve bought that have no necessary function or sentimental value whatsoever. It keeps me from realizing what I do have and then I end up not using the things I actually want to.
What other downsizing ideas do you have?
